Fila, a renowned clothing brand with a history spanning over a century, began its journey in 1911. Founded by two brothers in the picturesque town of Biella, at the foot of the Italian Alps, the company started with a modest textile shop offering tailoring materials to the local community. Thanks to a decade of significant growth and gained experience, the brothers decided to expand their business to knitwear production, creating high-quality sweaters, scarves, and jumpers. Innovative designs and reliable quality quickly brought the brand fame throughout Italy, leading to a merger with Fila Fratelli in 1942 and another 25 years of success in the knitwear industry.
In 1968, aiming for further expansion, Giansevero Fila hired Enrico Frachey as the managing director. Frachey, deeply respecting the brand and understanding its goals, became the person who introduced Fila to the global sports market. A pivotal moment for the company was the launch of the “White Line” sports collection in 1973, which considered both the athletic and aesthetic needs of athletes. The collection, drawing on the tradition of white attire in tennis, introduced originality through the elegant use of Fila’s characteristic colors: navy and red.
The success of the “White Line” enabled collaborations with prominent athletes, such as Bjorn Borg, whose unique personality and playing style perfectly matched the brand’s bold designs. In the 1990s, Fila expanded its range to include sports footwear, contributing to its success in the streetwear market and attracting the attention of not just athletes but also cultural icons like Tupac.
Fila has always remained true to its unique style, setting it apart from other industry giants. Its clothing, known for bold colors and daring silhouettes, has regained popularity among vintage lovers and the 90s fashion scene, collaborating with brands such as Odd Future, Urban Outfitters, and Fendi. Fila’s legacy, based on innovation, quality, and unique design, continues to attract new generations, strengthening its position in the global fashion market.
